Farmers’ Markets for Seasonal Fresh Shopping

By Mary Beth Roach

From apples to zucchini. From bedding plants to baked goods. From hanging baskets to kickballs.

The Central New York Regional Market has an abundance of locally-grown fresh fruits and vegetables, plants and goodies for shoppers to enjoy at the 2100 Park St. location. And there’s an abundance of vendors. At the height of the season, the market can draw approximately 300 vendors — farms and artisans — and thousands of visitors, especially on Saturday mornings.

The farmers’ market runs from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays, from May to mid-November and on Saturdays year-round, with a flea market on Sundays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The market has been a staple in Central New York for generations, having opened in the 1930s.

Some of the vendors, like Matt Hoxie, of Fulton and Hahn Farms, of Baldwinsville, have been part of the market for decades, while some, like Rob Branshaw, of Our Indigenous Garden of Lysander, is in his second year there and has been very pleased with the response he’s received.

Vendors all accept cash and some may accept forms of credit. They also may take EBT tokens, if they sell SNAP eligible products. M&T Bank has an ATM on the market property.

And speaking of abundance, the market’s website — cnyregionalmarket.org — has a wealth of information on the market, specific vendors and more.

Below is a listing of some of the other farmers’ markets in Onondaga and Oswego counties. Please note that there are other markets; these are the ones who responded to our inquiries.
